H I S T O R Y

Erin’s parents were tailors, and died when he and his twin brother Dearthair were very young. They were then raised by their stern grandmother, who had once been a well-known tailor but was now retired because of age and arthritis, instead now simply overseeing the running of the family shop. Erin doesn’t recall his parents at all – his earliest memories are of playing with scraps of coloured material on the floor of the main workshop, trying to keep out of the way of the bustle.

Both brothers were apprenticed to the family business at a young age, and while Erin had nimble fingers and enjoyed the mechanics of sewing and fitting cloth together, he had little skill for design, preferring to sit quietly and unobtrusively and work at the same monotonous task until it was complete. Often he would work far later than he was supposed to, lost to the world outside and forgetting to eat or sleep unless reminded. This task usually fell to his brother, as their grandmother was generally pleased with such dedication, no matter what toll it took.

Erin was never healthy, and suffered pneumonia twice as a toddler, once during the family illness that killed his parents. The fact that he survived was testament to some kind of inner strength, but regardless, this left his immune system very weak. Barely a month would ever go by without him coming down with some kind of cold, and while he would always protest that he was fine and could keep working, he secretly liked being ill because it meant that his brother would look after him. While he tried to take care of his brother as best he could in return, he always felt very unnecessary in that regard, and was generally content to be protected and loved and occasionally coddled.

At around the age of thirteen, Erin had been sent out on an errand for the tailors, and was in a hurry to return. In his haste he tripped and stumbled directly into a perfect stranger walking in the opposite direction, sending them both crashing to the ground. This stranger turned out to be Ciaran, only seventeen at that time, and new to the area. After Erin’s initial embarrassment had worn off, the two of them got to talking. Erin ended up being very late back, and received a scolding from both his grandmother and his overprotective brother.

From that point on, Ciaran and Erin fell easily into a friendship that Dearthair quickly joined. Erin had never really known of anything outside the tailors and the few surrounding streets, and loved to listen to everything Ciaran could tell him about other places. He was incredibly happy to have made his first real friend, and when his brother began to voice suspicions about Ciaran’s slightly mysterious past, he essentially dismissed them. Things continued like this until Erin and Dearthair were sixteen and Ciaran’s twentieth birthday approached. Erin dithered as always over what to get him, but eventually settled on a journal that had been on display in a nearby bric-a-brac store for - was it forever, or just a week?

The journal took the sight from Ciaran’s right eye, leaving it blank and grey. Though Erin could not possibly have known it would happen, nor was there any concrete proof this random even could be blamed on a journal, he descended immediately into guilt and swore that he would bring back Ciaran’s sight no matter the cost to himself.

Only a little while after this, everything started happening at once. Erin discovered another journal identical to the first, and recklessly began to write in it, expecting to lose the sight in one eye himself – while this wouldn’t help Ciaran, to be damaged alongside him made perfect sense to Erin. Meanwhile, Dearthair discovered the nature of Ciaran’s past as a hired killer in Dakan, and rejected him with extreme prejudice. By the time that encounter was over and Dearthair had returned home, Erin’s mind was already starting to slip away. Impulsively Dearthair packed their things and left, intending to keep Erin safe from the perceived threat of Ciaran and hopefully find a way to put his mind back together.

All Erin really knows is that he’s happy with his brother but he’s sure he’s missing something. Sometimes he forgets even that.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Erin is a kind and generous person, if naturally quiet and melancholy. He is always polite and, while generally too shy to initiate conversation, is friendly to everyone he meets. However, he has trouble forming genuine attachment to people beyond his general concern for them, and while he is compassionate, he only really values Dearthair and Ciaran as special to him. He smiles very rarely, even when he’s perfectly happy. This only adds to the dreamy aura that clings to him, making him appear unreadable to those who don’t know him well. He dislikes getting physically close to people, but can be a little clingy at times with those he trusts – especially with Dearthair, since he’s used to being looked after by him and wants to protect him in return.

Erin is the kind of person who accepts his lot in life with little complaint, and was always content in his apprenticeship. By the same token, he is content enough with his new existence, although this could be due to the deterioration of his mind and the loss of understanding what exactly is going on around him and what might happen to him. His fits of melancholia are also growing worse, however, especially in his rare lucid moments - though he tries to put on a brave face for his brother. His personality now fluctuates with his memories, and he can be a little unpredictable at times, though he remains essentially the same gentle person.
